Formula 1 driver Massa in stable condition, says official

Budapest - Felipe Massa, the Brazilian driver injured in Hungary's Grand Prix event at the weekend, is in a stable condition and able to communicate after sustaining a scull fracture, the Defence Ministry's spokesman told public television on Monday.

When Massa was spoken to, he was able to signal in reply and move his hands and feet, Istvan Bocskai said.

Massa is in an intensive care unit of the State Health Centre (AEK), one of Hungary's top hospitals, which operates under the aegis of the Defence Ministry.

Bocskai said that it appeared that Massa had started to make what would be a slow recovery. Early in the morning doctors carried out an ultrasound examination and the results, he said, had been reassuring.

It is likely that his brain has not sustained any particular damage, though it is not possible to know for sure at this stage, he said. A fresh CT scan will be done later on Monday, he added.
