Roma Holocaust remembered on Sunday

Budapest - Hungarians on Sunday commemorate Roma Holocaust Day, remembering the "tragic and futile" deaths of tens of thousands of Hungarian Roma killed in Auschwitz on this day 65 years ago, liberal leader Attila Retkes said in a statement sent to MTI.

"On this day we must remember the tragic process which went from labelling to segregation and murder of our Hungarian compatriots," Retkes said.

He added that the "social integration of the Roma had failed to take place in Hungary since the transition to democracy" and urged people to protest against Roma segregation.

The governing Socialist party MSZP gave warning in a statement that the commemorations had gained in topicality as "dark and threatening endeavours return to newspapers, streets and even to the European Parliament."
